Dear Lady Mary Many thanks for asking me to tea, but I came here so soon after that there was scarcely time. I didn't think you were offended with me about my politics, and the lunch you gave me wasn't hugger mugger, and your house-keeping I am sure is very good. Please don't think me guilty of any

such heresies. I hope you and Mr Murray [Gilbert Murray] will keep well and be able to support a July in Glasgow.

Tweedside is looking very pretty. I never remember seeing the growth of vegetation at this time so strong. I am not overworking, but only doing enough to satisfy my conscience, and spending a great deal of time in the open air. I have just been reading Zola's Rome, which I thought a thoroughly tiresome, stupid novel.
