I send you a copy of my little book, which is just newly published. Now that I read it in print I don't feel at all satisfied with it. Some of it I like, but in a good deal of it I think I have been quite unsuccessful. Of course

you will understand that it is all written in character, and that this accounts for the frequently exaggerated sentiment and style. I only hope that you will not repent now of having given me permission to dedicate it to you. The binding of the book, I think, the most awful conceivable – a lurid nightmare.
