I had father's letter this morning and the telegram. I would have liked very much to see John Lane, but I have written him to say that if he wants an interview I can be in London for a day or two before going up to Oxford. I hope the evangelistic meetings will get on all right. From Father's report they don't

seem very flourishing.
I had a nice letter from Aunt Kate to day telling me to come down on Saturday, one from Crockett asking me to tea on Sunday, & one from C. Dick giving me a full-length account of the performance of Trilby.
I hope nothing in my letter kept you & Anna from coming yesterday. You would get Aunt Aggie's letter last night explaining things. I was down at the 4 & 6 trains last night meeting you, but no one came. I am getting through a good deal of work, & have almost finished an article for the Herald. Yesterday afternoon I went a walk to Tweed and bathed in a fine deep

hole, where I severely dinnled my knee in trying to dive. I will bathe no more in Tweed. At night I went up to Bamflat & stayed all night. They have got a fine old bureau there (1750 is the date) of solid mahogany & full of secret drawers. Uncle John was at Peebles yesterday & bût [bought] 100 yowes, which he drove home, and left at Dreva. This morning Eben & I went for them, and drove them with great difficulty to Bamflat.
