Tuesday 23rd A very fine day like spring, no snow on land or ice. Wells & Kelly gone to Kingston on the ice. Maud gone to school. Voltie & Mart went to Lindas Isle for setting up wood. Voltie came back, stoped & choped some wood for Eveline. After dinner drew straw from stack then Voltie helped churn and went with Frank Woodman to draw a load of wood, for Charley Woodman has gone for the doctor for his father who has got the grip. Grace finished her waist for the ball. Grace went to post a letter to Montreal and found the McNeeley's just starting for home. Wells and Wells Jr came home at 7 PM. Henry Holliday here in evening and went skating with Lill Niles. All the rest of the youngsters at Breakeys Bay
Wednesday 24th Cloudy morning and springing up from the South, blowing a gale. Gulls flying from the Lake. Voltie and Mart went to Lindas Isle to pick up the wood & get back at dinner time. A disapointment to Grace and V on account of the storm for they cannot go to the ball. Storming

hard rain and wind terrific. Voltie hitched up and went for Maud, Shelly & Milly and bring them from School. Mr Niles came home from Marysville through all the storm. He drove up in his buggy. The ice from Marysville to Kingston very poor
Jan 25 Thursday 1894 Voltie came down stairs this morning singing after the ball is over. A still bright clear morning. Wind N, ground bare and frozen, ice glittering in the sunlight. Wellie, Voltie, Mart and Wells Sr went to Lindas Island for wood found the ice good for a double team and heavy load, drew one load for Wellie. After dinner Grace to get subscribers for the Ladies World but got wrong, went to C Woodmans, Obriens, Barrys. After supper she went to Mrs Niles to make an evening call. Voltie went with Will, H Woodman to Clubbing bay on ice foat [sic] for oil, had to push the boat most of the way over and back again. about 8 pm. George Morgan Jr came home with V and stayed till 10 PM

Jan 26 Friday 1894 Sun rose clear but soon grows cloudy, a very cold morning wind East. Voltie, Mart & Wells Sr drew wood from the Isle. Wellie went to grapple for his sturgeon net. ground bare and hard frozen with the furrows and hollows filled with ice. The weather clouds and air threatens snow and hope we will get good sleighing for we have had none this winter. Wells is just saying that before long the roads will be so filled with snow that it could be hard to get through the snow.
Saturday Jan 27th 1894 A fine day. Wind SE, very pleasant, about an inch of snow on the ground and ice. Wellie, Voltie & Mart drawing the straw stack in the barn all A.M. Wellie stayed to dinner. Made E a lemon cake. After dinner V went to O'Briens to get the horses shod. O'Brien not at home - gone visiting sturgeon net. Wells Sr making a lounge from an old bedstead. I mended clothes and ironed patch work pieces. Grace cleaned floors &c &c

Jan 28 Sunday 1894 A quiet half cloudy day not very cold. No one here except Will called about a sick calf, been hooked. Voltie & Grace spent the day at Wellie's had a pleasant time and in evening went to church. Maud going too. E Bates piloted Will Alen & wife across to the American shore they are going to visit their relatives and friends. The Sabath day comes gently to a close and all is well
29 Jan Monday A mild cloudy day looks like rain or snow. Wind South. Voltie went to James OBrien to get the horses shod, came home just in time for dinner. Wells Jr got one sturgeon and pulled out the net, all snarled and full of weeds. Heard this day something terrible. Why should I write in this diary that Cobet had killed Mr Athel in a prize fight. Snow begins falling fast, heavy, full of snow from the North East. Grace & Voltie instead going to Kingston tomorrow & stop at Marysville to the Ball tomorrow eve. Grace and I dressed three turkeys for market. Mart commenced going to school this morning. Voltie drove to school house through the storm for Maud.

Tuesday 30 Jan 1894 Snow piled up very deep this morning. Voltie wallowed through the snow this morning to the river for a pail of water, snow above his knees and still snowing fast and steady. So once more the Marysville Ball is a failure and disapointment, but V & G do not care. Maud will have to stay home from school to day and the turkeys will have to lay in the market basket till the storm is over and the roads are plowed. Lill Niles has a quilting party the PM and V drove with Grace to the quilting, this party is in honor of Lill's birth day. Well after V got back from the quilting we heard Will Gillespie's child is dead. So they have no evening party at J Niles. Jim Obrien went for the sprail and stand is the box
Jan 31 Wednesday. A fine bright day, rather cold. Wind W. Wellie came up to pull the fish net and draw hay, and then drove to foot to get fish and I go down to Eveline's on the sleigh and stay all day. Wellie got 2 sturgeon from the lower nets, snow on the ice is very deep as well as every where else in the evening. V & G & M go to Mission meeting. V goes home with Lill. Mart comes home very noisy and smoking around
