and evil, and we were bound to a temporary dissapointment -
Just as we were leaving Counter's, the runners of a sleigh drawn by a
fiery Chesnut, got interlaced with those of the gallant Grey Lancer - The
Chesnut protesting jibbed and committed all sorts of unpleasantries, & the
Greys turned in precisely the wrong direction. In an instant, both
sleighs were emptied, and all was confusion - Fortunately neither sprains
bruises or fractures resulted from this akward contretemps, a roll in the
Snow being all the damage inflicted. The sleighs being righted & the
robes &c adjusted, the ladies with undaunted courage, again
trusted themselves to their unlucky Cavaliers - About half a dozen
of the tracking sleighs, having started prior to this untoward event.
The Club occupied a straggling line of more than a mile in [latent?].
We proceeded in the direction of Waterloo for about a mile & then took
a sharp turn to the right over a line of country which would have
gladdened the heart of a Miltonian. We chose like Veterans of the whip,
and after a run of twenty minutes brought our fair charges in safety to
the old Waterloo road; from whence a short quick drive brought us to the
good old city of Kingston, which we entered at the head of Princess Street, &
in a few minutes we arrived in compact order at the Tête de Pont Barracks
The Vice President having announced the day for the next meeting, &
appointed the new V.P. we departed for our respective homes, pleased with
our drive, charmed with one another & perfectly satisfied with ourselves.
