Kingston June 14th 1897

A meeting of the Council of the Corporation of the City of Kingston
was held this day. Present

Aldermen Allen, Bell, Carson, Donnelly, Elliott, Johns, Kent, Livingston,
Minnes, Mooers, McKelvey, Richardson, C.Robinson, Ryan,
Stewart, Tait, Taylor, Toye, Walkem, Wright

On motion of Ald Livingston seconded by Ald Donnelly
Ordered That Ald McKelvey take the chair.

Communications Summarized were read and referred as follows: -

From J.H. Birkett asking that calling attention of the Board of health to
the condition of the slip at the foot of Earl Street sewer and asking that some steps be taken
to abate the nuisance of having the ship [ST:slip?] dredged by the Corporation - Referred to the Board
of Works.

From Macdonnell & Farrell re Broken stone on the Murdock farm and notifying
the Corporation that they will proceed to realize upon the property which is part of
the security unless some action is taken - Referred to the Board of Works.

From W.P.N. Pope Under Secy [Secretary] of State informing the Council that His
Excellency the Governor General did not consider the case of John Wilson confined in
Kingston Penitentiary to be one for executive interference. Filed.

The Mayor here entered and took the chair.

The Council resumed.

From John Bannister complaining of cattle running at large and
asking to have the nuisance complained of abated. - Referred to the Board of Works.

From W.S. Gordon Secy of the Board of Health enclosing copy of resolution
passed by the Board at a meeting held on the 18th May asking that drain be
constructed on Queen Street - Referred to the Board of Works.

From J.J. Kelso, Supt [Superintendent] Childrens Aid asking the Council to adopt the
act passed by the Ontario Legislature at the last session re protection of infant
children - Referred to the Committee on Finance &c.

From C.W. King Secy Lords Day Alliance calling attention to the number
of Taverns and Barber shops open on Sunday 23rd May contrary to the violation of
the law - Referred to the Committee on Finance &c.

From Jno [John] Macdonald Sec Treasurer of the Board of Education applying
on behalf of the Board for the use of the City Park in which to hold a Demonstration
by School children in honor of her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee - Referred to the
Parks Committee with power to act.

From John McDonald Secy Board of Education enclosing copy of Resolution
passed by the Board at a meeting held on Feby 3rd, 1897 informing the Council
that the B of Education was prepared with any committee which may be
appointed by other bodies with a view to any general celebration - Referred to
the Committee on Finance &c.

From Macpherson & Hooper re Taxes - Referred to the Court of Revision.

From John Duff Secy House of Industry asking the Corporation
of the City Council to consider the advisibility for the erection of an Hospital for
incurable - Referred to the House of Industry Committee.

From J.S. Foster and Co. asking the Council's patronage for the
City Directory for the year 1897 & 1898 - Referred to the Committee on Finance .

From W.S. Gordon City Commissioner calling the attention of the
Council to the dangerous pit on two vacant lots on SydenhamSt and Raglan Road

and
