The two Officers at last came to the conclusion
that any further endeavour on their part
towards Kelly's caption would be fruitless, restrained
as they were from pursuing him on shore, a
step which they felt assured would be immediately
considered a flagrant, violation of the positive
orders they had received. At the expiration of six
weeks a representation to this effect was forwarded
to the Government of the United States, the consequence
was that an Officer was sent down from Sackets
harbour
in a hired Steamer having on board two
hundred of their troops with directions to co-operate
with the British Officers for his apprehension

Prio to the arrival of this Steamer an
official communication had been forwarded to
the English Officers acquainting them that such
an arrangement had been entered into between
the Government of the United States and the
Canadian authorities, and directing those two
gentlemen to afford every information and cordial
assistance to the Officer in Command of the
troops respecting Kelly's haunts and in every
way to consult and concert with that Officer
in any measure that might lend to the accomplishment
of the duty upon which they had
been so long and ineffectually employed.

For sometime past Kelly had failed
to make his usual appearance before the bivouac,
