My dear mother
Arrived safely a little after 9 this morning. The trunks came all right and are both unpacked and the things put away. My room is very pleasant and there are two windows, two tables, a bureau, a washstand, a closet and a nice large bed in it. Please tell grandmother that I am very much obliged to her for her present and mean to write to her. Mo says there are a good many grey squirrels here. My love to all.

My dear mother
Thy nice letter arrived yesterday and as regards thy question of the stove Mo says Mrs. Hayward furnishes stoves when the weather gets cold. I am very comfortably fixed up here and my room looke very nice except for the bareness of the walls and I should like it very much if you would send up a few old pictures or something of the sort. Mrs. Hayward not furnishing lamps

I bought one yesterday also some books & a bottle of blacking and brush. I had a very nice trip on the sound but did not wake up as we were coming into Newport but luckily did while we were there and had as good a view of it as the darkness would permit. Please tell Edward that Mo has outside of his window in a cage two grey squirrels one his own and one another boy's and that when you turn a wheel which there is outside of the cage around very fast

the squirrel if he is in it goes turning around with it being upside down a good deal of the time. I am in the Junior class as I wanted to be and will have very little to make up but Latin and will not have to study very hard.
Mo has been very kind, showing me around and taking me to see the professors.
Please give my love to all I am thy affectionate son Wm W. Smith.
