Status: Needs Review

to maintain for the most part my acquaintance
with the Latin - although I am entirely sensible
of the great advantage I should derive -
from the study of the Hebrew, I feel
that would now be exceedingly difficult
for me to acquire a new language, after
so great a lapse of time since I have pursued
philological studies. I do propose however to
review my knowledge of the Greek, so far as to be
come acquainted with the Greek Testament, and
I shall therefore be anxious to avail myself, in
such a way as may be suitable, of the lectures of
Professor Stuart - if I am permitted to com
mence with the studies of the second year, there
will still be an immense field of investigation
before me, which will fully occupy more time than
I probably can devote to the work of preparation -
then I feel it exceedingly important to have the bene
fit of the recitations of the Professors; and if
the Trustees can permit it I should prefer
to take my seat not as an honorary but as
an active member of the Seminary, and place
myself under the same rules & regulations that
bind the rest. I need all the instruction that I
can obtain at Andover as much as any the indi
vidual in the instutution. I would state, however,
that since I became interested in the subject
of religion, which was about eighteen months
ago, I have devoted all my leisure time
to the study of the Bible, with such commen
dations as I could have at hand.

As I understand from your letter, that
some act of the Board of Trustees will be
necessary to meet my case. I would respect
fully request you. Dear Sir, to make appli
cation to them in my behalf. Although a case
like mine is now somewhat novel, it is to
be hoped, that the time is speedily coming
when such instances will be of frequent oc-
currence; and on that account, it seems nec-
essary, that some general provision should
be adopted.
A residence at the Seminary, especially as I
shall be separated from my family, will in
any event, require a great change in my mode
of life; and I have therefore thought it would
be best for me to take lodgings in a private
family. Oon this account, I shall be precluded
from any allowance from the fund,
but some other person may thereby re-
ceive such assistance, who needs it more
urgently than I do myself.
I shall not be able to make my ar-
rangements so as to be at Andover before the
last week in October.
I am Sir, with great respect
your obedient servant
Chas. Packard
