Mr. Ezra Abbot,
Brunswick 5. March 1819.
My dear brother,
I had some conversation with you,
before I left you the last month, respecting your paying
a part of Mrs Carleton patrimony, to be vested in
the new Bank going into opperation at Portland.
I find that 1/3 part is to be paid in the first instalment
in specie, & that it must be paid by the
20.th of March instant. I have thought that
it would not be prudent to depend on your getting
the money down in season, & have therefore,
thought it best to make provision myself for
the first instalment, both for the shares I intend to
hold myself, & those which I wish her to hold
if she can pay for them. You need, therefore,
at this time, give yourself no trouble to raise the
money. Instead of this, I should be glad, if you can,
that you would pay the amount of the 1.st & 2.d instalment
on her four shares, before the last of August next;
otherwise I fear I shall not be able to hold them for
her. The amount would be $266.67. The last instalment
will be wanted in February next.
On leaving Andover, I left of chewing tobacco. It is now about
three weeks sin I have had a quid of tobacco in my
mouth. I have got along with it better than I expected
to do. I feel now pretty confident of succeeding.
