Son of Captain John Abbot and Abigail Abbot, John Abbot 3d was born in Andover April 8, 1759, attended Harvard (class of 1784), taught at Phillips Academy (1786), was a tutor at Harvard (1787-1792), studied divinity but was prevented by ill health from preaching. He was connected with Bowdoin College from its founding, 1802, until 1829, as professor of Ancient Languages and Literature, librarian, trustee, and treasurer. Died at the ancestral homestead in Andover July 2, 1843.

Dear Brother

You know, perhaps by experiance, that we who have have been leaining over the shovle all day are willing to give them selves all the pleasure we possably can in the evening; and I think, the most ready way for me to injoy my self, will be to write a few lines to you.

But what shall I write, I have nothing new that I know of, only that I had the pleasure to ride fore or five miles upon a horse with a young lady last evening. As if I should tell you that I have had thoughs of Marrying before next spring you wont believ me I suppose?

You must conclude that I forgot to thank you for the letter that I receive of the forth instant for I think it is the most agreeable letter I have receive this

Sir

This is to inform you that the Committee for supplying the Desk in the South Parish in the Town are desirous, from the character you sustain, of engaging you to preach hear sin sabbath from & after the second sabbath in January next. Be so good as to acquaint us by mail on what we may depend that we may know how to act. It is our earnest desire that you may be hear the third sabbath in next month but, if previous engagements forbid, inform us on what sabbath in January or even in February you will be here and we will by occasional supplies only, keep the Desk for you till the sabbath you name. This latitude is given on account of distance; but our wish & hope are that you will be hear if not on
