Coventry, March 25. 1802.
Honored Sir,
By the kind care of a good providence we are in good health. Betsy has been more healthy the past winter, than for many years, & she can use her eyes in the day time with the needle. Our children have been very well; the youngest is more quiet, than either of the others were at her age.
The season has been very singular. We have had no comfortable stirring upon the snow; indeed we have had very little till the latter part of Feb.y & that was accompanied with much wind. The spring appears to be opening upon us quite as fas as is desirable. Hay is very plenty & stock is very high. Crops were good the last season; but hte produce is plenty, yet it still retains a high price. Labor here is likely to continue high; the six suceeding months will probably be about ten dollars a month. Having very little stock & it being very dear, labor being likely to bear a higher price than produce will in

the fate, have induced me to let the farm, which I bought last year. I have let it for 80 dollars. The farm is in such a state & let to such a man as I do not apprehend that it will be left worse than it is now. A note of 500 dollars will become due for the land next Jan'y. This I believe I should be able to meet & answer other demands; especially if much dependence could be put upon punctuality respecting my salary. But I am about purchasing the small piece of land of about 7 1/2 acres lying on the front of mine & which will makae my lot much more convenience. It will cost about 20 dolls an acre & pay must be prompt. Perhaps I cannot give you a better idea of the land then by the following figure; rear of my Cot I suppose it will be necessary to ask & receive the assistance of some of my friends in purchasing (diagram labels) this lot, or in discharging the great note, unless I press my people harder than I wish. I know not from whom I should be more probably assisted, than yourself. I should wish for the use of 100 or 150 dollars

till I could make a turn of some of my land lying at a greater distance, which cannot be done for ready payment. - - - - We talk of visiting our friends this spring, tho there is some uncertainty attending it. We wish brother Ezra would let us know of what time he will be here, & we will endeavor to order our visit as not to interfere with his. It has been a long time since we have heard directly from Andover, &c. It gives us great satisfaction to know the state of our friends & to partake in all their joys. We very much lament the death of Gov'r Phillips. We pray that God would raise up others for church & state. This is a day in which there is much need of such firm, pious & amicable characters. You will feel the loss very sensibly in your town. Every exertion is here making to revolution in this state; & I presume exections eve as great in Massachuestts. We become the lovers of order to be firm & active in duty & commit this country to God. Duty, love, be to your family, Your Son A. Abbot
