The price per chain, bid will be un- derstood to include the whole breadth to be grubbed and cleared, which varies ac- cording to the slope of the ground, and the depth of cutting. No extra allowance will be made, unless the line be so altered as to increase the grubbing and clearing. For Earth Excavation-A price per cub- ic yard. the price bid, will be under- stood to include all the various kinds of earth which may occur. For the Excavation of Solid Rock-A price per cubic yard. For the Excavation or removal of detach- ed pieces of Rock-A price per cubic yard. Those only will be estimated under this i- tem, which contain over one cubic foot each; all smaller rocks or stones will be es- timated and paid for as earth excavation. For Embankment-A price per cubic yard, to be measured in the bank after it is finished, and has become sufficiently solid and compact. When job is to be accepted soon after its embankments are completed, the Engi- neer will require the height and substance of the banks to be increased to such extent as he may deem necessary to secure a bank of proper height and substance after it shall have become settled. In all cases embank- ment will be laid out with such base and height as the Engineer or Acting Commis- sioner may consider necessary to the safety and permanency of the work; and will be estimated to the contractor accordingly, making allowance for shrinkage.
