trip to Santo Domingo to pick up outfit that Lamb
and Borell left there last June. On the way over
here from there, this afternoon I saw a pair of
Black-tailed Gnatcatchers ( 10 miles or so north of
Santo Domingo), a Cactus (?) Woodpecker some 3 miles
further on, several ravens, etc.
Sept. 26
Birds noted last night and this morning around
night's camp: Rock Wren 2; Say Phoebe; Mearns
Thrasher; Raven; Bewick Wren; Brown Towhee;
Wrentit; San Telmo Valley here is level as
a floor, a mile or more wide, covered with tall
composites, some of the stalks 10 feet high. Hills
on either side, with cholla and tuna cactuses,
some agave, and much low brush, now seemingly
lifeless. No water here, but much seepage land
at and just above San Telmo where Lamb
and Borell got the Black Rails.
10 a.m. Now high on mountains over toward
San Jose'. Some sagebrush (a. tridentata) and juniper
on a mesa at about 3000 ft. See Bell sparrows
and a Greenbacked Goldfinch.
Arrived at the Melling Ranch (San Jose') at noon,
after some troubles. 3:00 p.m. -- have made camp
under willows and cottonwoods by a flowing
stream -- a most grateful oasis. I hear
Ravens, a Nuttall woodpecker, a yellowthroat,
a Rock Wren, etc. Out (sic) first, the specimens taken
