Front Line 1917 Aug 4 cont.
night. Brigade Machine Guns fired on enemies' com-
municaitons and supports throughout the night while
Lewis Guns directed bursts of fire on enemy front
line system and also engaged enemy aircraft this
morning and afternoon. At 7.30 am one of our aero-
planes patrolled our lines and covered N.30.a. Afterwards
flying towards LENS. During the day our planes were
engaged in observing enemy batteries.

Activity of enemy artillery was below normal, with occa-
sional shellings of our Front and Rear areas. At 3.30 am
about one hundred (100) H.E. and fifty (50) Shrapnel shells
were placed from N.32.a.7.3. to N.33.c.3.3. About sixty
(60) heavy rench Mortar shells were distributed along our
front line rom N.26.c.7.6. to N.33.c.1.9. during the night.
Granattenwerfer bombs were also used, falling as far
to the rear as SASKATOON RD. Their macine gun acitivity
