Trenches 1917 Ap. 5 cont.
thrown into the air. Our Trench Mortars were engaged from
11 until 11.30 am shelling the enemy's line in the neighbour-
hood of Crater no. 3 and the junction of Clutch and
Cyms trenches. Brigade machine guns during the
preceding evening and night and about 7.30 this a.m.
were noticeable in their bursts of fire. Lewis guns
also carried out their usual intermittent firing.
Over 30 of our planes flew over this area about 6.30
last evening, many of them passing over the Hun Support
lines. A few A.A. guns fired on them but without
effect. This a.m & p.m two of our planes patrolled
the area over Zouave Valley & also crossed over the
Hun line. A.A. Guns fired on them.

During the relief yesterday, the enemy artillery was
very active from noon until 5 pm. His shelling
consisted chiefly of H.E. and was directed on
Zouave Valley and Hospital Ridge. Ersaty C.T. was
blown? in and several casualties to troops caused
Enemy retaliation on our shorts at 6. am, 8. a.m &
