Front Line 1917 Aug 12 cont.
fire by Enemy Machine Guns on our front line and com-
munication trenches during the night. Several enemy ac-
roplanes crossed our lines this afternoon and directed
artillery fire, while a large number were observing over
this area late this afternoon. Four observation balloons
were up in the rear of AVION. Whilst our Artillery was
shelling N.22.d. at 9.15 pm. The enemy sent up red flares.
Many golden flares were used during the night.
Movements and works of the enemy:-- A party of
seven was seen at N.27.d.9.9. at 8.50 pm disappear-
ing behind the ruins. A party was seen at N.27.d.9.8
at 1. pm carrying machine gun and equipment. A
party of ten appeared at N.27.d.7.7. coming from under the
bridge & moved to N.27.d.3.6. Considerable movement
was again observed today around the area of N.21.c.75.80
A enemy sentry was observed behind an obstacle at
2449 Wt W14957/M90 750,000 1/16 J.B.C. & A. Forms/C.2118/13.
