In connection with this subject I would suggest the creation of a
special grade of the degree of bachelor of arts, to be called "Bachelor
of arts with honor" and to be conferred on students of superior ability
and industry who perform a given amount of extra work, This
work may be carried on with the award studies. When a text
book lesson is assigned, the Professor may indicate a certain
amount of collateral work in other authors or may name
points for research, or may give the subject for a thesis, all
such additional work to be optional. When work of these kinds
is assigned as regular work to the class, an extra amount
may be assigned as optional. The examinations a few
questions conring optional work may be proposed. Those
who do no optional work, but pass in the ordinary way
would in the end receive the degree of A.B. Those
who finds doing the regular work with ordinary thoroughness,
attain to a certain grade in the optional work
would gain the degree of A.B. with honor. This degree
when conferred should be so announced on commencement
day and so published in the catalogue The degree of special
honor conferred by [illegible] Universities, may be left for future
consideration
The increase in our expenditures which appear in the
finance report was caused partly by the expense of frequent
visits to [illegible] while our appropriation bill was funding
but chiefly by the payment of additions to salaries authorized
at the recent extra session of the Board
In accordance with authority given by the Board to the
Executive Committee, the Comtee agter some correspondence with
and respecting different architects agreed with Mr.
Samuel Hanaford of Cincinnati for plans and
specifications of the alterative and repairs to be
made on the college buildings. He is to receive two
percent of the contract price of the work and to be
reimbursed his necessary travelling expense.
The agreement was made April 14 and the
measurements of the buildings were taken April 19th
and 20th if sketch of the main building reached at
May 23rd the working plans and specifications

This unexpected and unfortunate delay will cause a
serious circumstance at the opening of the fall term
It will probably be impossible to occupy the buildings
at that time and in that case we shall have to
rent rooms in which to hear recitations
The Committee drafted to leave the east building
our of the first plans, lest the expense should
[illegible] our resource. Perhaps it would
