On page 1356 John Rogers. "His wife and childred being XI in number X able to go, and one sucking onher brest, met him by the way as hee went towardes Smith field: this sorrowfull sight of his owne flesh and blood could nothing moove him, but that he constantly and cheerefullie took his death with wonderful patience, in the defense and quarel of Christes Gospell."

"Matthew's Bible" (Antwerp, 1537) More of Tyndale's work appeared in this Bible than in any toher. "Thomas Matthew," said ont eh title-page to be the translator is regarded as a pseudonym for John Rogers, a companion of Tyndale, who prepared the work for the press. HTe Matthew Bible had offical approval. Thus Tyndale's work fobidden during Henry's reign when put forth under Tyndale's name, was transmitted, ironically enough, by a Bible having the government;s sanction. See #50 - A Traictise Declarying ..... unlawful. London: R. Caly 1554. Martin finished this work late in 1553. It was dedicated to Queen Mary, who took such favorable notice of the book that she saw to Martin;s advancement in her government. - J. Foxe was on eof the most convinced + stalwart of the champions of the Reformation. THe Book of Martyrs is the epic of the martyr age of the Church of England.

Colin Claire, History of Printing in Britain - Despite the expenses they had incurred Grafton + Whitchurch were well rewarded, for by Dec. 1541 they had printed 7 ed. of the Great Bible for which they had the sole publishing rights. The only other Cranmer Bible to appear during that time was one printed by Petyt + Redman in 1540 (See #395( for Berthelet, but this was poorly printed in comparison. - THe 2nd + subsequent ed. of the Great Bible were often known as Cranmer's Bible owing to the fact that they contain a preface by the Archbishop. - There were 4 furhter ed. in folio + 6 in quarto until it was finally superseeded by the Bishop's Bible of 1568.

* The Byble in Englyshe (Great Bible) London: Richard Grafton, July 1540/ Ref: S.T.C. 2076 Herbert 54. folio Copy: BH, BM, NN (337x137mm) The 3rd Great Bible; and the second with Cranmer's Prologue. 534 ff? A full column contains 62 lines. Black letter, double column. This is one of the rarest editions - The 3rd + 5th editions carry a notice that they were "overseen" by Bishopt Tunstall + Heath, this to disassociate the Bible from Cromwell;s namem for he had fallen from the King's favor + had been executed in 1541. - THe text mainly follows taht of the 2nd ed, though it contains a number of minute variations. HEHL 73097 July 1540 - this ed. has many thin, some thick + a few small pointing hands placed in the text + margins. leaf book Franeis Fry Great Bibles (1865) thick hands [Parts I, II, III (my leaf, 43) none in parts IV or V]

April 1540, some thick hands May 1541, no hands Dec 1541, some thick hands 1539 - thin pointing hands in text + margins.

- The Great Bible was often reprinted - 18 ed. up to 1568 - it is of interest to note taht teh Psalter in the English Book of Common Prayer yet retains Coverdale's Great Bible version. - In oone of history's great ironies, the 3rd + 5th ed. of the Great Bible notte that they have been "overseen and perused" by Bishop Tunstall. Tunstall knew he was authorizing a Bible that relied heavily on Tyndale's translations, yet under King Henry's command he was forced to sanction the work he had once * [inserted] *tried so hard to abolish. Issued in a smaller, more convenient format than its predecessors, the Geneva Bible was produced by Protestant refugees in Switzerland, after having fled the Roman Catholic persecution in England under Queen Mary. THis was the 1st English Bible to use cerse divisions + the 1st to be printed in Roman type. WIlliam Whittingham's N.T. appeared in 1557; the complete Bibel in which he had assistance from Anthony Gilby + Thomas Sampson in 1560. For well over half a century this was the Bible most read by Englishmen + most often reprinted. Because of its conncections with Calvinism, it was especially favored by the Puritans. - The Geneva Bible + John Foxe's Book of Martyrs were the two most popular books in Elizabethan England.

Quarto - this is the most ocmmon format in which the Geneva Bible was printed; it served for many years as the family Bible for Puritans + Presbyterians throughout the British Isles + in America as well.
