By 1675 copies of Eliot's 1st ed. of the
Bible were becoming increasingly scarce. The
Reverend Eliot peitioned the Corporation in
England for the Propagation of the Gospel
for funds to print a 2nd ed. He was
successful in his request and printing commenced
in 1678, with the New Testament completed in
1680 and the entire Bible in 1685.
The 2nd ed. has no facing English title page

1663 Type - brevier - not far from
present day 7 point size

When 20 yrs. later after the disastrous
King Philip's war copies of the Bible
of 1663 could no longer be found for
distribution to the Indians. Robert Boyle
supplied the funds which made a new
edition possible and when he died in 1695.
has left a substantial bequest to the New
England Co.
