Named after the family who liberated Judah
from their oppressors + restored religious
freedom + political independence to the Jews,
I-II Maccabees give 2 independent but
complementary accounts of the Maccabean
revolt. The are notable among Biblical books
for their historical accuracy + indeed are the
only source for some of the events in this
important period, Maccabees I was originally
written in Hebrew, although it survives only in
Greek translation, Maccabees II was
originally written in Greek.
