in Germany + was only 3 yrs. old when he arrived
in Philadelphia c his father. In 1763 he finished
a 4^0 ed. of the Bible in German on a pica type; +
completed another in 1776. The type for the latter
was completed in his own foundry. This foundry was
the 1st of its kind in British America. The materials
for it he received from Germany in 1772. In 1773
he built a paper mill on the Schuylkill river.
Besides the various branches of bookmaking he dealt
in drugs + medicines. In 1777 he gave up the
management of the printing house to 2 of his sons.
He died Aug. 26, 1784, aged 62 yrs.

Nearly the whole of the unbound sheets were destroyed
by British troops after the invasion of Germantown.
