M. Furter - earliest book both signed + dated - 1 Oct. 1490,
but he is mentioned as a painter as early as
15 Jan. 1483 when he bought a house in
Basel. He continued printing regularly in the
16th C and died in 1517. - more than 100 ed were published in the 15th C.
Postilla - one of the earliest bestsellers - 44ed. from Germany
+ 19 ed. from Switzerland - about 40,000 copies were placed
in circulation during the last 28 yrs of the century. Its
popularity continued into the early years of the 16th C.
-- earliest ed. Augsburg: G Zainer about 1472. This compilation
of the Postilla was written down in 1437 XXII
