Leonardus Achatu - after producing some 5 books at Padua in 1472-3 + possibly 1 at Santorso (1474) he became the 1st printer at Vicenza + between the spring of 1474 + 1497 printed there some 2 score incuncabula of a rather varied character.

Woodcuts of this period were cut on "planks" of fairly soft fruitwood. The relief images so produced were inked with a mixture of boiled linseed oil + lampslack + printed on the hand press - finished with hand coloring. Fuchs - hand finished with (later ? by owner) transparent water color. privately colored original - well finished color copies were issued by the publisher. 1542 + 43 herbals exist in both colored and uncolored copies
