greater part of his limited activity as a pritner. Only in a few books did he use together with this type a heading type which seems to have been based on Ulrich Han's gothic text type. C. Arnold was a native of the Duchy of Prussia + possibly was an assistant in Christoph Valdarfer's printing office. In 1472 he opened a printing office of his own in Venice. During his 1st years he printed exclusively with a roman type + from 1476 just as exclusively with gothic types. The book bearing his signature is dated 1479. - Two recensions of the Compendium theologicae veritatis were published in the 15th C. That with the more flowering explicit printed in Nuremberg, Speyer, Cologne, Ulm, Deventer + Strassburg treated the text as anonymous. That with the breifer explicit, printed in Venice with several Lyons reprints, attributed the text to ALbertus Magnus. The extensive MSS tradition made further attributions to Alexander de Hales, St. Bonaventura, Aegidius de Columna, St. Thomas Aquinas + others. The tree author, Hugo Ripelin of Strassburg (O.P. d. 1268.) was prior of the Dominican convent of Strassburg. Magnus - the most important observer of nature that the middle Ages had yet produced, the greatest naturalist since Pliny. His most valuable studies are perhaps his botanical + zoological works.

Picture of Queen Elizabeth - at prayer in her apartment. on the reverse of Table.
1+2 - Both texts are sometimes referred to as Queen Elizabeth's Prayer Book, though textually they differ except for a very few prayers. In #6428 the 1st section (quires a-p) is largely selected with minor modification from #4028 ( d. 1575? by Henry Bull - "Christian prayers + holy meditations") - It was left for John Day to put out a series of prayer books which in format + general appearance resembled the older primers (Hour Books). Teh pages were decorated with borders, which showed schenes from the Old + N.T., a series depicting the Dance of Death + other allegorical + decorative devices. The tile page had an elaborate design of the Tree of Jesse, + all in all the books bore a remarkable physical resemblance to the Primers fo the Old Religion. Day's 1st volume was published in 1569 (#6428), but after the 1st ed. he dropped all the prayers in foreign languages + put out the work again with a new title, (#6429) "A book of Christian prayers....." in 1578.
