J. Zainer - brother, Gunther. - father 1473-1493 likely teacher - J. Mentelin (the elder) 1 total output
- son, 1496-1519. T 170-180 ed.

influence - Ulm Dominican monastery - Feliz Fabri +
Prior Ludwig Fuchs. There is no doubt that it was these
2 men's initiative + help that was responsible for the
strikingly larger number of works by authors of the
Dominican order printed in Ulm in the 15th C.
Until the early 80's the texts chosen for publication by
the Dominicans were exclusively printed by Zainer;
then - after the decline fo his press, he was replaced
by Dinckmut.

The chief attraction of this + several other notable folios produced
by Zainer between 1473 + 1476 is a fine woodcut border
which opens the text, + a splendid series of ornamental
initials, copied from Romanesque. MSS initials, which
appear throughout the text. These beautiful
initials, which are among the earliest woodcut initials
to be pionted north of the Alps, were not much imitated
in Germany, where late Gothic capitals became more
popular.
