4 of the later ed. in Czech, German(1563), Latin & Italian , published in Prague (1562) & Venice 1565 & 1568 contained , however, a new [marked out] set of large sized figures which are of considerable interest. Shading is extensively used & the details are executed - great skill.

Mattioli's commentary on Dioscorides text was [illegible] largely at the practical purpose of medicinale phytognosis and acquired intrinsic value both through the wealth of its descriptive details of each plant and through its accurate drawings. Mattioli may therefore be considered a member of the Vesalian school of morphological observation. The work made it possible to identify and compare its plants and herbs with those mentioned by Dioscorides and also with those found in nature. By 1568 more than 30,000 copies of the Italian text had been sold (dedication leaf *7n) 4 later ed. Czech, German, Latin and Italian published in Prague (1562) and Venice (1565 and 68) contained a new set of large sized figures, not dependent on color as are those of Fuchs, were sometimes painted though. for all their skillfulness the illust. to Mattioli marks the beginning of the decline of wood engraving.

Fundamental to the work's success is its conception and execution as a practical scientific treatise. It was intended for daily use by physicians herbalists and others who could find descriptions and notes on medicinal plants and herbs, Greek and Latin names and synonyms, and the equivalent in other languages.

Editio princeps of Aristotle's works. "Aristotle is not only one of the great classical philosophers, the master of every branch of ancient knowledge; his method still underlies all modern thinking... the great Aldine ed. was the 1st major Greek prose text to be reintroduced in the original to the western world by the invention of the printing press" - Printing and the Mind of Man. Unlike other classical writers, Aristotle retained his fame through the Middle Ages, largely through the works of Thomas Aquinas, Albertus Magnus and Averroes. Theophrastus, c374-c286 BC Greek philospher and naturalist Botanical science in the broadest aspects received a tremendous stimulus in Greece under the leadership of Theophrastus and his disciples. He was the founder of that science and one of the greatest botantists of all time. Theophrastus is said to have written more than 200 treatises, of which his 2 botanical works, The History of Plants and The Causes of Plants are the most important that have survived.
