One of the 3 major poets of Latin tradition. Ovid made
his primary contribution to Western literature in the
Metamorphoses, a cleverly assembled verse sythesis
of the myth of transformation. In most of the tales
a human being is changed into a nonhuman form
befitting his action and personality. The transformation
theme which permeates so much medieval and Renaissance
literature is derived from the Metamophoses.
Medicamina - celebrates beauty, love and the kind of sophistication
which improves on nature. The introduction is a lecture
on the theme culta placent (11.3-50) the appeal of culture
in the broadest sense of the word, including bodily care.
