Angelus Carletus de Clavasio was Vicar General to the order of Friar
(Franciscan) Minors and an influential diplomat and theologian. He is chiefly
known for his "Summa" a collection of 659 alphabetically
arranged articles constituting an encyclopedic exegesis of
ecclesiastical terms and a general dictionary of moral
Theology. Because it deals in considerable detail with issues of
moral conduct, casuistry, and canon law, it was a widely
used guidebook for confessors until well into the 16th C.
