Ancient manuscripts were venerated as relics + so book
shrines or "cumdachs" were developed to enhance + protect
them. They are indigenous only to Ireland or to places
under Irish missionary influence.

Stowe Missal 712-815
Christianity brought literacy + Latin to Ireland + the
Irish scribes created inventive profoundly influential
books. Although they preserved the Irish copies they
devoted their greatest artistic efforts to Latin Christian
writings.
Lindisfarme Gospels (698) Insular majuscule hand - Northumbria
block books - a total of 100 editions of about 40 different
works are known - Biblia Paraperum - known in
10 editions.
