Carter p. 58 Peter Schöffer's press at Mainz was among the first to use an English-bodied Schwabacher, (20 measure about 90mm) with the Hortus sanitalis of 1485. A year later Erhard Renwich printed his Breydenback's Peregrinationes also at Mainz in a fount made from the same punches, though not the same matnius, except that he introduced a d without a loop. His d is too big, and he must have cast de di do & du using two matrices side by side in the mould to produce the combinations on a single piece of type, because in these doublets the e i o u are also too big & differ in design from those of the fount. (2 forms for the ower case letters b d h k, one with a straight ascender & the other with a loop. The looped forms tended to disappear as time went on)

Levaine A 655.1 [?]65 By far the most important of the illustrated books of Mainz, and one of the most important of the 15th C, is the Peregrinationes in montem Syon (Travels in Mount Syon) written by Bernardus de Breidenback & published by the artist Erhard Renwich in 1486, using Peter Schoeffer's type & probably his press. Breidenback was a wealthy nobleman who reputedly had a loose life until the time of his pilgrimage, which he undertook in penance. He brought with him on his hands the artist Renwich to draw the cities & sights they saw along the way. This was the 1st time that the name of the illustrator of a printed book was recorded. Most of Renwich's pictures in Peregrinationes are views of places visited: Venice, Corfu, Candia, Rhodes, & others. Some of these are double-page views to fold-out shapes - the most extensive is the view of Venice, which folds out to a leaf 57" long plus its facing page. A map of Palestine is almost as long. Renwich made drawings of the types of people he met in his travels - Saracens, Greeks, Jews, Indians - all in carefully detailed costume. He also drew the strange beasts of the Holy Land - some so strange they must have been meant as jests. In the illustrations in this book, Renwich used cross-hatching for the 1st time in wood cut history. He used the direction of the line & consummate skill in molding.

Woodcutter Erhard Renwich at Mainz - produced the illustrations to the Peregrinatio in Tenam Santam (1486) by the Dean of Mainz Cathedral, Bunbard von Breydenbach. This was a very popular work. 8 editions appeared by the end of the century. Renwich was a native of Utrecht, & his style has been compared to that of contemporary Dutch woodcuts, especially those of Delft.

Stanford Catalogue - Renwich's woodblocks were still used in the editions of 1486, 1488, 1489, 1490, & 1498.

H.W. Davis Re. Z 3479P6D3f Dern of the Mainz cathedral - buried in the Chapel of Dun Lady in the Mainz cathedral - from 25 April 1483 to the end of Jan 1484 was occupied by the Pilgrimage. The Dean & his fellow pilgrims {Graf Johann von Solms Philip von Bicken} started from Oppenheim (near Mainz) -> 15 days travel to Venice - met to many other Pilgrims who were going on the same journey.

- The woodcuts are the earliest authentic represaentations of the places depicted; these are the ports usually visited by every pilgrim of the period on his journey to Jerusalem.

- The most popular travel book in Europe up to the discovery of the New World. - on the way they visited the principal cities of the eastern Mediterranean, saw the Holy Land, & went on to the Montastery at St. Catherine, Mount Sinai, Alexandria, & Cairo. See #124 ->Apart from his journal of the pilgrimage in the Holy Land itself, Breydenbach's remarkable work includes a closely observed description of the inhabitants, manners & customs of Palestine, a Life of Mahomet [inserted] Mohammed [end inserted], accounts of the Sieges of Constantinople & of Rodhos, & the alphabets of 7 of the languages encountered including Greek, Hebrew, & Syriac.

1st ed. tone of the great illustrated incunables (in William Morris's opinion "the best executed illustrations in any medieval book") The text & pictures are a record of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem & St. Catherine of Sinai in 148389 by Breydenbach, dean of Mainz Cathedral & several noblemen of the region. An artist, E. Renwich of Utrecht accompanied them, & the cuts are based on his drawings. Possibly Renwich is to be identified to the anonymous artist known as the Hausbuchmeister. Renwich names himself in the colophon as the book's printer. Because the types are Schoeffer's, it has often been supposed that Shoeffer was the actual printer. But several aspects of composition & layout differ from the current practice of Schoeffer's shop. e.g. the widely variable page-lineation, reflecting forme-selling from poorly-estimated copy.

Breydenbach's journey to Palestine & Mt. Sinai, in company to other Mainz patricians & local noblemen, extended from 25 April 1483 to 2 Feb. 1484. The artist of the woodblocks, E. Renwich, names himself as printer, but the typographical materials are Peter Schoeffer's.

Type 64A (BMC) Gruninger - Small text type - used in 1491, 1493, 1496-1500. Majuscules from other fonts, mostly smaller, found mixed with it, but rarely: heavy (Lombard) majuscules occur occasionally. Idistinguishable from Pruss 65 save by double hyphen + absence of paragraph mark.
