Vellum - brown ink in a gothic hand
14 lines to a page - burnished gold initials -
with rubricated initials in blue + red penwork
and bar endings in red, blue + gold.

The Book of Hours was a new kind of prayer book which emerged
in the 1st half of the 14th C. Usually written in the vernacular
rather than Latin, it begins with a calendar. Elsewhere in the book there
are miniatures of such standard subjects as the Passion, the childhood of
Christ + the life of King David. Marginal ornament plays an
important part, whether in the form of tendrils + foliage or of a
solid frame decorated with animals, flowers + precious stones.
