German opponets fo Luther. It became very popular
in France + passed through many editions.

In 1538 the Icons were used to illustrate a Vulgate
by Trechsel of Lyon, + in later years we find them
in other Vulgates as well as in the French edition of the
Louvain Bible in 1550.

The popularity of Holbein's Icons is amply evidenced
by the rapid sequence of deitions. Following the 1st Lyon
edition of 1538, with a second issue in the same year,
a new editon appeared with in French text in 1539. The
1543 + 1544 editions had Spanish + French text respectively.
Two french editions were published in Lyon in 1547.

Hans Holbein came to Basel + lived there from 1515 to
1526 - added luster to Fraben's books.

Geisberg - These small pictures for the Old Testament 60:89mm are far
superior to the Wittenberg illustrations which probably preceded them.
These pictures have no parallel in the Wittenberg Bibles
(Woodcutter - Lutzelburger who settled in Basel in 1522)
-> died before 1526 Holbein -> designs for the Old Testament.
