p. 591 R. Mortimer Z881 H33 Ref. - The blocks are those used for François de Belle-forest's revision
of S. Münster, La Cosmographie universelle de tout le
monde, which was published by Chesneau & the elder
Michel Sonnius in 1595. (3 vol. in fol.)

Cosmographie - the most widely diffused Basel books of the 16th C.
- greatest work of its kind in the 16th C.

Cambridge History of the Bible vol. 3 - The great name in Hebrew studies after Reuchlin was that of
Sebastian Münster of Basle - dedicated a lifetime to Hebrew
studies, producing over 40 books. In 1527 he produced the
first Aramaic grammar written by a Christian. He made
available to Christian scholars through his Latin translations
the best work of Elias Levita, the greatest of Jewish
grammarians in that age. Edited a Hebrew Bible at
Basle in 1535 & acompanied it with his own Latin translation.

- he departed from the extreme literation of Pagrimi in his
own Latin version of the Old Testament. It appeared in
1535 in two volumes & was reprinted in quarto size
in 1539. This version gave an impetus to Old Testament
study similar to that which Erasmus had given to the study of
the New Testament. Froschauer's press did well - this version had
a powerful influence among the Swiss reformers & it affected
many of the renderings of Coverdale's English Bible.
