Your name Richard Leroy Munger
Did you by any chance keep a diary of what happened to you that day?
no
Were any of your friends killed or wounded either during the landing or
during the day?
yes
Do you remember any conversations you had with them before they became
casualties? no
Were you wounded? no
Do you remember what it was like—that is, do you remember whether you
felt any pain or were so surprised that you felt nothing?
I didn't feel any pain and I wasn't surprised.
Do you remember seeing or hearing anything that seems funny now, even
though it may not have seemed funny at the time?
Well, one thing did seem funny, is that we had to cast off this big hauser rope that pulled us across so that we could consume our fuel. But it was to heavy and water soaked, it was awfully funny that they didnt give us anything to cut it off with, but luckily, one of our crew had a English knife and he sawed at it for a long time before we were loose.
Do you recall any incident, sad or heroic or simply memorable, which struck
you more than anything else?
yes, I saw the "Raingers" chink a rope ladder
on a overhanging cliff. I was really surprised
how they did that. I also saw a L.C. V.P. sunk with a man
still alive hiding behind what was left of it, I sweard to him to come over to our
L.C.M. which wasnt to far away from him. One man of our
underwater demolition team ran off without his gear.
One man on another L.C.M. was shell shocked one man wrote to my house
telling my family he saw me killed. I was missing in action but I wasn't
killed all this was on the sad side.
