The subject of Intemperance increases throughout every part of the U. [UNITED] S. [STATES] which has a very good effect in many respects. As respects the people of this place the number of reformers have increase beyond all calculation.
There were 43 Retailers of Spiritis, they are now reduced to 10 or less - 30 or 40 of the inmates of the Assylum [ASYLUM] at Quaise have come down & signed the pledge, and behave themselves quietly and soberly, and have furnished themselves with a reading room, papers and so forth, where they associate together very comfortably.

The winter is more than half gone, and generally speaking it has been moderate. Very little snow - much rain and wet, some short spells of Cold.
This morning the Thurr. [THERMOMETER] was at 10 to 12, which was the Coldest we have had this Winter.
The harbor is scimbd [SKIMMED] over with Ice.
This morning the cry of fire alarmed the whole town which proved a Chimney or the Moon setting or some other triffling [TRIFLING] thing.

At 9 oclock this evening the town was alarmed by fire, which proved to be the Lower Negro dancing Hall. Which was wholly burnt down.

About noon on 2d day, a fire was discovered in the Cooper-Shop of Coffin & Gardner, Corner of Whale & Water Street, from the location of the building, would have done much damage had it not been early discovered. By timely assistance from Pumps near, it was extinguished. Two hundred Staves were burnt, and some tools injured. Its origin is unknown; no fire having been used in the Shop since 7th day, and then, not where this broke out.

Nathl. [NATHANIEL] Barney attended the funeral of TRistram Swain, by some accident another Carriage came in contact with Nathaniel's and upset it, he was something hurt but not dangerous, his wife & sister were in the Carriage but not hurt. The Carriage was much damaged.
