State of Ohio Greene Co SS.
Daniel Rhoodes whose post office address and residence is Xenis O having first duly sworn says he was intimately acquainted with Jackson Smith late husband of Asy Smith and who was a private in Co. "C" 100 U.S.C.T. I know said Jackson Smith and Asy Smith for at least 12 years before he enlisted I was a Slave and belonged to John Hedges of Bourbon Co. Ky. I and Jackson Smith both belonged to John Hedges, and Asy Smith at that time belonged to Alfred Warnell of Bourbon Co. Ky. He was a grand son of John Hedges John Hedges had this girl Asy Smith here and we all three all worked and went together in same neighborhood I mean Jackson Smith Asy Smith & my self. Said Jackson Smith and Asy Smith were married and cohabited as man and wife in Bourbon Co, Ky. Their marriage was slave marriage same as my own marriage. Said Jackson Smith & Asy Smith never married any other person before the war and did not either of them cohabit with any other person as man or wife. This old man John

Hedges is now dead. After John Hedges died Jackson Smith free to wife of John Hedges and lived with her a while and then he was sold Suttin, and then Suttin sold Jackson Smith the John Smith, and then he went by Smith Said Jackson Smith's name was Jackson Hedges when Hedges owned him At and before enlistment said Jackson Smith was a stout and healthy man the stoutest and healthiest man old John Hedges had and to show he was a good stout young man he sold when Hedges sold him, he sold for $1200.00 and when Suttin sold him he sold for $1500.00
After Jackson Smith enlisted in "C" 100 U.S.C.T. I did not see him again until after the war. I saw him in Paris Ky when he got discharged After he was discharged he came right to Paris Ky and there I saw him and he and I came to Xenia Ohio together, this was about December 1865 we came to Xenia, O. together and stayed together until he died April 27, 1874. He stayed about Paris Ky a few days after his discharge and then came to Xenia, O., and lived here until he died.

At the time Jackson Smith was discharged and came back to Paris Ky, he was in poor health had a bad cough complained of soreness and pain in breast, then in flesh weak, I was very intimate with him from his discharge until his death Saw him nearly every day during that time, and I know his health was very poor all the time from his discharge until his death, his cough continued with him until his death. Jackson Smith and said Asy Smith lived and cohabited here in Xenia Ohio as man and wife and were so recognized I have know said Asy Smith well ever since said Jackson Smith died, and know that she has not remarried since his death and she has not lived or cohabited with any man since her husband's death.
Jackson Smith was a rather dark man, he was about 5 ft 7 or 8 inches high, heavy build a farmer when he enlisted I can't tell his age but I would think he was near 30 years old when he enlisted.
