Czech. July 1st

Good Morning Darling,

Here's another Sunday morning, though I doubt if it as nice as last Sunday. A bit cloudy and cool too.

I haven't been out of bed very long, a bit sleepy this morning or lazy maby both. Its after eleven A.M. Now.

Well this is July 1st, I remember well where I was one year ago today. We arrived ^(at) the omaha beach France. The liberty ship parked (anchored) about 2 sea miles out the evening before and that night we had an air raid, the jerries were driven away by Ack-ack and didnt do any bombing. My first time for the real thing

around noon or maby before we climbed into a landing craft and started through the hundreds of ships to shore, then war ships, all kinds as far as one could see [crossed out word (in)] up & down the beach & harbor. Many of them had been sunk and there [crossed out word (Werl)] were lots driven on the shore during the storm a few days before. The beach was strewed with wreckage of all kind. After our L.C.T. docked at the pier (we had waited for the tide for a couple of hours) we waded ashore. It was a hot day and we were carrying every thing we owned plus ammo. I've had my rifle loaded since that day, and only shot at one measly jerry plane. We had about five miles to walk & with all that equiptment it was pretty rough & it raining too. Passed lots of pill boxes that had been knocked-out, mine fields

There were lots of our tanks in the ditches [crossed out word (of)] along the road, a crew trying to get them out. After a long period and several stops along the muddy road we finally came to a little town and just outside of there was one area for the night. And ending my first day in France. Next morning we moved-out.

I don't know why I thought about writing you about my first day over here, we've come a long way since them -

So-long for now its about time for me to eat chow and I have to work this afternoon

Love always, Charles.

Sunday, P.M.

Dear Doris:

Your letter came some days ago. I was delighted to learn your mother is much better and back home. I sincerely hope she continues to improve. Please give her my best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

I haven't heard from Charles in some time. My last letter was written the first week in June. I'm not sure about the date. 4th or 5th, I think. There has been nothing in our papers since the listing of the 38 divs. that

you wrote about. However, one of my friends (the Book shop one) gets the Sunday Edition of the N.Y. Herald Tribune. In last Sundays edition, June 24th, it listed and located 45 divisions, but said none of them had been permanently assigned. The 79th was mentioned as being among 7 divs. then in Checho-Slovakia and [crossed out word (was)] it was stated to be in the Falkenau. [crossed out word (So)] The article went on to say that these 7 divisions were awaiting orders to fall back from Checho-Slovakia into Germany as [crossed out word (their)] that territory is to be in the Russian Zone.
