Description: Used to record notes primarily, this cloth-bound volume measures 3 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches. Blank pages were intentionally included to show a separation of text. Poe uses the first three pages with lists and notes, then numbers the subsequent pages the numbers 331-445. Many of the numbered pages include notes regarding India and the caste system with some notes attributed to publications and to people that he has interviewed. The pages include titles of works that he has read, along with his own observations and ideas. An entry near the last pages (not numbered) bears the date of March 10, 1911. Two of the last pages are used for drafts entitled "To the Memory of My Mother," who died on March 2 while he was crossing the ocean back home. Poe reversed the volume and entered five pages of notes and lists, possibly ideas for articles. An example is the title "The Chief Lessons of Worldwide Tour." His outline that follows includes the topics of conservation of resources; industrialization and machinery; racial purity; religion; and individualism.
