Description: Includes the final version of a typescript diary (63 pages), which includes descriptions of Poe's trip around the world, from August 15, 1910 until February 25, 1911. Blank pages were intentionally included to show a separation of text. The first pages of the journal include descriptions and observations of his course of travel by train from Raleigh to New York, then through Ontario to Chicago, eventually ending the first leg of the journey in San Francisco. From that port, Poe embarked on a steamship, the S. S. Korea, Pacific Mail line. The itinerary in order of country visited and selected places within is as follows: Japan (Yokohama, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka); Korea; China (Peking, Canton); Hong Kong; Philippines (Manila); Malaya, later Malaysia (Johor, Pennang); Singapore; India (Calcutta, Siliguri, Darjeeling, Benares, Agra, Muttra, Delhi, Amber, Bombay, Madras); Ceylon, later Sri Lanka (Colombo; Kandy); Suez Canal; Egypt (Port Said only); passed Crete; Italy (Naples, Genoa); France (Paris); England (London, Liverpool). Poe sailed on the Franconia on February 25, 1911, and after a stormy winter voyage, reached New York on March 6, then Raleigh on March 7. The contents of the journal indicate that the trip was taken for educational and business purposes, and the entries attest that Poe was focused on his work. In keeping with Poe's writing for and management of the Progressive Farmer, the journal entries reflect his ongoing interest in agricultural, industrial, and social conditions in North Carolina and abroad. Ultimately the journey was also personal, with one indication being the poem "Wanderlust" by Isabel Mackay that he selected as a prologue to the journal. Poe added as an epilogue the poem "Names of Romance" by Berton Braley.
