Mr. N.C. Newbold
Raleigh, N.C.
Dear Mr. Newbold:
Complying with your request that I make careful estimate of repairs needed on the old buildings at the Durham State Formal School, I find these following repairs necessary:
1. Auditorium. Repair front porch, put in new floor, rewire building to meet the requirements of the city and State insurance inspectors, put in new posts in auditorium in place of round
posts now there, paing outside of building two coats. Approximate cost
$1,500.00. These repairs will put this building in first class
condition.
Concerning the wiring of this building, I think
it would be well that the Board consider the letter I wrote you in
answer to Mr. Cannedy's findings under date of April 27.
2. Girls' dormitory #1. It has had the repairs made
as designated in letter to Mr. W.H Brogdon under date of March 26.
Other repairs needed for this building are rewiring to meet the requirements
of State an dCity insurance inspectors, putting in new side stair
way and painting building two coats. Approximate cost $1,000.00
3. Boys' dormatory. I find it necessary to build new
porches, both front and side, to rearrange brick coal bin in rear of building,
put in new roof over over entire building, make some minor repairs to
room in basement, first and second floors, repair brick wall in boiler
house, requiring to meet requirements of City and State insurance inspectors.
Approximate cost $1,800.00
4. You will please note in my letter under date of March
25 to Mr. W.J. Brogdon concerning the girls' dormitory #2, tht I made an
estimate of $1,000.00 to put this building in [illegible] table state for the next
two years. Since the writing of this letter the insurance inspectors of
both City and State insist upon practically requiring the entire building to
meet the City requirements. This will increase the estimated cost for
repairs on this building, including the new roof and the painting of the
