30 1915 Remarks
Feb 16th Rainy in morning clearing employed getting goods from shore & stowing back hold. watch ashore at night took water from boat. [entry complete symbols] 17 Got balance of goods from store house. rain in early morning but clearing after 7 P.M. employed stowing back watch ashore at night [entry complete symbols] 18 Fine weather today. mod. trades finished stowing hold. few men ashore for the night [entry complete symbols] 19 Fresh E wind clear & warm in sun got sea stock of jams sweetpotatoes & ect. from shore also took balance of water from boat Port watch ashore on liberty until Sat. morning 20th. [entry complete symbols] 20 Strong E wind clear & dry. watch returned at 7 am with exception of James Walter & Nicholas dos Reis Starboard watch went ashore on liberty 8 am. until tomorrow morning. Anton Andrade & R.M. Soares arrested on shore for fighting in street. 21 Sunday & fine day watch returned with the exception of Antone Britto George Thompson & Raphael M. Soares. 31 1915Remarks Monday Feb. 22th Fine day and warm. Geo. Thompson James Walter, Antone Britto & Nichlas dos Reis still on shore. water police ordered master of vessel to appear at court at 10am. went & found there Geo. Smithurst & Llewelyn Griffith police having arested them as deserters. they were ordered put on board by the judge. Anton Andrade & Raphael Soares were also there Soares accused of & ordered to prison for five weeks for creating a disturbance & assaulting the police. Andrade was sentenced to two weeks in prison for interfering with the police when they or he was, or had, arrested Soares. the four men Thompson, Walter, Britto & Dos Reis were also at court. later master ordered them on board they not complying got warrants made out for arresting them but magistrates having left court at 2:30 could not get them signed. So ends another day [In margin, written vertically] – Raphael Soares Antone Andrade sent to jail 23rd Another fine but hot day. the four deserters came on board this morning. Griffith got a ladder over the side at about 1:30 am & a paddle & went ashore. got out a warrant for his arrest & police brought him on board this P.M. at 8 P.M. master came on board all ready for sailing. at about 8-45 N. dos Reis Sylvester Montino (or Robert) were detected swim ming toward shore. lowered a boat & chased them. police boat also being called to assist finally got them police boat bringing one on board & our boat the other. police ordered them handcuffs & after severe wrestling had to throw Montino & put irons on him. during the melee which was on quarter deck the other men from forward came aft & tried to prevent officers & police from putting the man in irons. [pre-printed:] 32 1915 Remarks continued Feb 23rd Walter started cursing the master & went in another part of the crowd cursing & [inecting?] them wherefore Master went & seized him he pulled away & got forward down in the forecastle saying come & get me. Master coming aft again the wrestling still going on. Carlos Almeida swearing & damming in a loud voice Master seized him he resisting & trying to strike Master police officers coming to Masters assistance he was finally put in irons. being obliged to throw him first. then went forward found N. Dos Reis who had hidden in fore hold. he coming peacably was put in irons & all three chained in house on deck. then proceeded to look for J. Walter found him forward in bow. he refused to come when police called him. they finally took hold of him & Stephen Ismael interfered & a hard wrestling ensued. finally Walter being separated from Ismael he allowed the handcuffs to be put on. Ismael resisting he was finally thrown & ironed & the two chained to caskrail. later Monterro being noisy cursing & insulting kicking side of house & kicking over boxes. placed a gag in his mouth whereupon he became quiet. Monteiro also got a club or belaying pin & tried to strike master who took it away from him. [pre-printed:] 33 1915 Remarks continued Feb. 24 Fine and clear with a moderate N.E. wind Crew doing nothing today. gave men in irons bread & water this morning. James Walter throwing his overboard. all the men still saucy except Nicholas Des Reis J. Walter especially. swearing that he would kill master when at sea. & otherwise being insulting. 8 a.m. master went ashore reported to Consul they going to Attorney General & getting advice. later got an order through Police Magistrate & Walter was brought into court at 4:30 P.M. being remanded until 10 a.m. tomorrow. Master being permitted to sail by U.S. Consul & the Magistrate. came on board at 6 P.M, went ashore & brought off another man to fill crew list. men in irons quiet. [End of entry symbols] 25th Light N.E. wind at day light. at 6 a.m. took anchor & stood to N.W. to leeward of the island under all sail at 8 a.m. took the irons took off the men. at 6 P.M. bark on the wind heading N. by E. under all sail Barbados out of sight. divided men into boats crews & watches today after getting decks clean. E.S.E. to S.W. saw nothing. stering N.E.xE under all sail that will draw. watch emplyed setting up rigging pumped ship at 4 P.M. having let pumps stand since Sunday. took five minutes to pump her out. Light N. wind bark under topsails & courses on port tack until 6 p.m. then wore ship. watch employed in rigging. cooper & blacksmith putting on sheathing on deck. saw nothing So Ends another day 4th. Calm until 2 PM. then light air [springing?] from S.W. at night fresh from N.W. clear sky saw nothing watch employed setting up topmast & top gallant shrouds cooper & blacksmith patching deck sheathing.
