--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES Line 6: Beginning on Feb 1, the difference in handwriting indicates that the log is now being kept by a different officer. The first mate, William Griffiths, chose to leave the vessel in frustration - See entry for Jan. 11. Lines 13 & 38: "Buboa" appears to be a nickname for the log keeper. Likely, the keeper is Francis Brown, the former 2nd mate. Line 19: Note that repairs are going on in addition the reparing the leak. Earlier in American whaling, vessels were subjected to a major refit following nearly every voyage. Later in the whaling era, more of the refit work was left to the crew while underway, or in foreign ports.
