Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic. Includes descriptions of types of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, shipboard medicine, desertions, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a diary following the voyage logbook written by Captain Chace's daughter, Marion Almy Chase. The vessel began leaking on November 14, 1914. The First Mate gave up the logbook and shipped home on 1 February 1914, and the Captain took over logbook duties. Several men got into a fight resulting in some arrests while on shore on February 24, 1915. One man was stabbed and wounded during a fight on July 10, 1915. The captain administered several medical treatments for venereal diseases in July 1915. One man was drunk and put in irons on October 2, 1915. One man died on November 15, 1915. One man was stabbed in the face with a pike on January 29, 1916. One man was punished after getting into a fight on June 5, 1916. One man was treated for syphilis on June 28, 1916. 10 Remarks on Board of Bark Andrew Hicks of Mon Nov 30th this day Comes in With N E Wind and Cloudy Weather 6 am keep steering for Saint Antone light 7:30 got up Cables and got all Ready and Came to anchor in 15 fathoms Capt Chace sent of tow Boat and she towed us in Close to the town in 3 fathoms of Water Where the Can fix the leak if Pasible Carpenter Coming off tomorrow 16 Steamers and two War Ships and one Merchant Bark so ends this day

ST Vincent Dec 1 this day Comes in With N E Wind and last night at 8:30 pm six of the Crew Went on Shore Without the Captain Permission Boat Came from Shore and took them from the head Rails at 3am they Came off again their names are James Walter John De Graua and Carlos Almeida antoine P andrade Repheal M Swares the Capt took all their Belonging and put them in Starboard house and Reported them to the Counsel and Came on Board at 4 pm and told they Was in the rong James Walters gave Counsel Back answers and told him he Wasent god Counsel forbids him landing on Shore to day Broke out the fore peack lighting up the Ship head so ends this day

St Vincent Dec 2d: this day Comes in With N E Wind Crew Emp Breaking Stores and pumping Water put the Ship down 3 feet by the Stern Carpenter from Shore trying to locak the leak at 5:30 pm Starboard Watch Went on leave for the night so ends this day

Chace Master Lat N Thurs Dec 3d: Long W this day Comes in With pleasant Weather and N E Wind Carpenters repairing Ship at 8 am Came to the Conclusion that Could not do anny thing With out Puting the Ship on a dry Dock as there is none here We must Stow Back again at 5 pm Port Watch Went on Shore While getting them started James Walter Cleared out in a Boat from shore geting in from fore Chains 2 Departers 3 arivals at 8:30 am pumped ship had been standing fifteen hours tacking 18 min on one pump so ends this day

Frid Dec 4th: this day Comes in With Comes in With fine Weather Crew Emp stowing Back and took in fiftwen tuns of Water 1 Steamer arived tow departed Carpenters finished 3 pm 5 pm Starboard Watch gone ashore James Walter Deserted Ship 5 pm pumped Ship 18 minutes in time so ends this day

Sat Dec 5th: this day Comes in With Strong N E. Wind all day. Crew Emp Stowing off fore peak finished at 3 pm 6:45 am Watch Came on With eccepteons of Nicholas Fernandes Repheal SWares James Walters not on board one arival 5 pm Port Watch Whent ashore for the might the New Bedford Schr Elector arived from ST Nicholass 9 am Ship leaking about the same tacking 17 minutes to pump her out after standing fifteen hours on one pump having 8 inches of water so end day

Squalls Crew Refuses to go in the Ship Counsel held a survey the harbor Master and one Capt and a Ship Carpenter Ship had been standing since last night 4:45 pm til 5:20 pm had 22 inches of Water We pump out 7 inches they decided to leave it til tomorrow so ends this day.

Tues Dec 8: this day Comes in With heary N E. Squalls at 9 am Capt of Port and Carpenter and another Capt came off Sounded the pump had 23 inches of Water gave orders to Brake out for peak started 9:15 5 pm not finished at 11 am most of the Crew on Board exception [Jhan filsao?] Joe Hermon Carles Almeda Several steamers Departed and 5 arivels so ends this day

Wed Dec 9: this day Comes in With fresh N E Wind part of Crew Breking out fore peak Survays Came on Board had another look found leak on starboard side three feet under water they went on shore again 12 men from Forward Cleared out so ends this day Counsel put James Walters in jail Thurs Dec 10 this day Comes in With Steady N E Wind Crew Emp doing notting waiting for a decisson of the Survayers at 3 pm American Counsel sent for the mate log Book for information nothing douning English Man War and Cargo Steamers going Coming so end the day

14 Remarks on Board of Bark Andrew Hicks Tues Dec 15: this day Comes in With light Wind from N E Crew Emp Stowing Back fore hold finished at 3 pm Manuel George Discharge sick and by lookes moar trying get thires 5 pm all but 2 went ashore at the Capt Request so ends this dark Wed Dec 16: this day Comes in With Calm several of this Crew holding the Ship from sailing the Counsel Refused to dicharge them But Sined three men in place of thoes that have been Discharged tuo English War Ships Came in Port and several Cago steamers Departed so ends this day

Thurs Dec 17th: this day Comes in With Calm Nothing douning 6 am found lanyard on the fore Smefter Cut off no boady knew any thing about it Ship leaking 10 inches in 15 hours tacking thirty minutes to pump her free it look as if they Were Bound to delay us as much as Possible so ends this day

Fri Dec 18th: this day Comes in With N E. Wind and Rain Showers lat part off the day Wind from South at 10 am go up Steam and put in new lanyard to fore shiller 12 pm all the men forward aboard of the Ship Boatsterers all on Shore 5 pm puled fires and this day gave nothing clome pumped Ship at 8 am 9 inches of Water taking 25 Shiruts and ayans at 4.30 had 7 inches Boats hanging round the Ship all day [Buying?] Waht they Can so ends this day
