1918 Day diary of the C.A. Chace farm
Oct. 16 This day carried father [by?] car to go on whaling trip on A.M. Nicholson as master. (Bid him goodby went thru [-] Fall River for a load of grain and brought on barel.) cider from Kit Bordens. Went in afternoon [to?] Dave Simmons (R.I.) Mill to get corn ground spent time while waiting at Gladys Cans. Emily and children going too. Came home finished up chores and came in house for the night so ends this day. Oct 17 This day comes in with cloudy weather. Did up chores and spent the rest of the day packing eggs, dressing foul and preparing vegetables for market. Went to So Westport for eggs. So ends this day. Oct 18 This day comes in with good weather loaded truck for market and peddled eggs this day. Sam being here fed foul and husked corn. So ends this day. tired out from city. Oct 19 This day comes in with good weather did regular chores all thru the day other time Stuart, Sam and my self husked corn. So ends this day Oct. 20 Very good weather today. Sam, Emily and children went to Tiverton RI. Stuart and I husked corn All turned out fine. So ends this day. Oct 21 Cold and damp put up vegetables and apples and packed eggs in the forenoon. Sam came up from Brightmans and dressed the foul for market. When chores were all done, and hens shut up went over to C.R. Tallimans for eggs. Went to bed late and tired.

Chace well known to this transcriber. [Note the spelling of Chace, used by Quaker families in Portsmouth, Swansea and Westport.] Line 4: This voyage followed a voyage masterred by Captain John T. Gonsolves , noted for saving the ship by pleading for mercy from a German U-Boat Captain, who had intended to sink the ship. Line 10: Emily is Marion's married sister. Line 18: Marion likely is refering to Westport Harbor. The Chace farm was at the Head of Westport. Line 22: Sam Brightman was Emily's husband; Marion's brother-in-law. Line 26: Marion was 19 years old at this time; managing the farm with help from Sam Brightman, and caring for her 11 year old cousin Stuart, this transcriber's father.

1918 Day Diary of C.A. Chaces Farm
Nov 1st This month came in with a perfect day. Friday [With?] the first day [of?] November, the corn is all husked excepted three shocks. Beans all thrashed out and [-] burnt up. Mother is down in Horseneck with Kate Talliman. Emily is house keeper. I have been to market with egg and vegetables. Mrs Sterrab presented me with a lovely plaid skirt. Went [to?] Grange meeting with Emily at home to keep house. [Mr.?] McCutcheon spent evening with Emily and kids. So ends this perfect day. 14 pullet eggs Nov. 2nd Another perfect day, did all the Saturday regular work with the hens. We now clean hen houses every morning. Drew water from brook for hens. Mr.(?) Smith had Rueben this forenoon. Brought the heifer home from Posinacks pasture and she is a bouncer. So ends this day with 12 pullet eggs. Nov. 3rd Another perfect day. Emily & children Sunday went back to N.B. after being here five weeks. Maurice & Bob were out to dinner. Mother is down to Horseneck with Katie. Did chores and after reading a while retired. So ends this glorious day 17 pullet eggs. Nov. 4th Today very unsettled, went to town with Monday three barrells [of?] apples for Sam and carried home Emilys things. Abbie went in town with me. Today we got 18 pullet eggs So ends this day. Nov. 5th Today I sorted apples and did regular Tues. chores, used up all the hay in our barn am bringing it up from Grandmas in bags. Line 8: Assume that "Emily" is Marion's married sister, Emily Brightman. Line 6: Charles Maurice was Marion's older brother; rarely heard from and would later disown himself from the family. Marion's younger brother, Albert died at sea from being struck by a boom. Do not know Bob. Sam Brightman is Emily's husband. Emily is Marion's older sister. Line 38: William Stuart Chace, here at age 11, is this transcriber's father.

west end of barn. Gus keep cow in small barn also his stalls he bought [of?] Arthur Petty. Stuart with our team helped him draw them one Sunday. So ends this day with 19 pullet eggs. Nov. 6th Another glorious day. been to town to Wednesday see about a check which was protested against me, for income signature, but was all a mistake the bank they apoligized. Did regular chores so ends this day with 17 pullet eggs. Nov 7th Today is Thursday again and a very cloudy Thursday cold day. Today I drew water then worked in the shed sorting apples and preparing for market. Also picked foul and packed eggs. Today Mabel Gifford telephoned. Mrs. Gifford wanted to see mother, took her up to the car at 4 o’clock. Came home and after supper went and got Alice to stay with Stuart and returned early in the evening so ends this day with 19 pullet eggs. Nov. 8th Today a grand day. Mother is in town Friday did up all the morning chores then started to market at 10:15 Randall Kirby was here today to feed up the hens for me. Came home from market and did up the night chores and retired at an early hour. So ends this day with 20 pullet eggs. Nov. 9th Today some what cloudy. Did regular Saturday chores Francis Brighman was here and pared apples today. Abbie got fired from Mc Donalds came back here. Mother is still over to Mrs. Giffords. Maurice went to be examined was put in Class 5D. Bob & Maurice came out and stayed all night. So ends this day with 26 pullet eggs.
