Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic. Includes descriptions of types of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, shipboard medicine, desertions, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a diary following the voyage logbook written by Captain Chace's daughter, Marion Almy Chase. The vessel began leaking on November 14, 1914. The First Mate gave up the logbook and shipped home on 1 February 1914, and the Captain took over logbook duties. Several men got into a fight resulting in some arrests while on shore on February 24, 1915. One man was stabbed and wounded during a fight on July 10, 1915. The captain administered several medical treatments for venereal diseases in July 1915. One man was drunk and put in irons on October 2, 1915. One man died on November 15, 1915. One man was stabbed in the face with a pike on January 29, 1916. One man was punished after getting into a fight on June 5, 1916. One man was treated for syphilis on June 28, 1916. Aug 23rd ...at 1 P.M. saw pod of young bulls. Got one alongside at 3 P.M. M. Soares off duty, bad eye. Lat. N. 32º-30’ Lon. W. 53º-11’ 24th ...saw one stmr. going to W. signaled her to report us all well, said she would. Mr. Soares off duty bad eye & pain through shoulders combined with gonnorhea & syphilis. 32-18 53-00 25th ...saw scattered young bulls at 6-30 am...lowered three boats (one officer sick) struck one whale & got him J. Antone made mess of another. darted at one & did not fasten (A. Spencer)...sent fourth boat with boatsteerer to pick up dead whale 32-28 53-05 26th ...J. Antones off duty ankles swollen. 32-27 53-06

Aug. 27th ..saw..a piece of beam from a wreck...picked it up & caught eight large dolphins & a lot of log fish. Mr. Soares & J Antones off duty. Lat N. 32º-29’ Lon W. 53º-10’ 29th ...raised a shoal of cow whales...got three. did not lower fourth boat, one officer & one boatsteerer being laid up. 32-14 54-30 30th ...saw...a buoy adrift. Large can buoy with frame work on top. buoy painted red...Mr. Soares & J Antones improving but still off duty. E. Bruce & M.J. Soares had a fight today. master separated them. cause of scrap, Ramos had lost his knife & C. Sealy had told him that Bruce had it, Ramos asking for it & Bruce attacked Ramos...had E. Bruce goods brought on deck & bunk stripped but found no knife...Bruce then accused Seely of theft. had Seelys goods on deck but found nothing. So ends Wednesday C.A.C. 32-39 55-44
