Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic. Includes descriptions of types of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, shipboard medicine, desertions, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a diary following the voyage logbook written by Captain Chace's daughter, Marion Almy Chase. The vessel began leaking on November 14, 1914. The First Mate gave up the logbook and shipped home on 1 February 1914, and the Captain took over logbook duties. Several men got into a fight resulting in some arrests while on shore on February 24, 1915. One man was stabbed and wounded during a fight on July 10, 1915. The captain administered several medical treatments for venereal diseases in July 1915. One man was drunk and put in irons on October 2, 1915. One man died on November 15, 1915. One man was stabbed in the face with a pike on January 29, 1916. One man was punished after getting into a fight on June 5, 1916. One man was treated for syphilis on June 28, 1916. 6th ...finished boiling body 4 PM & started on junk. J. Antones on duty. Steward & R. Britto improving, both on duty. Manual Lima & G. de Cruz Assumcion were fighting the morning mate brought them aft to Master who got the cause. started calling names..got mad. Lima began by calling Da Cruz “Cask” Assumcion returning with filthy language. gave them advice & sent forward. 33-14 53-30 8th “Bertha” in sight...spoke her at 10-10 a.m., raised whales at 12-30 Capt. Joseph went on board let him have a man (A.P. Andrade) he being very short handed. mated & lowered three boats each. got one whale saw three chased off. Schr. Valkyria [7/14-9/16] came up and lowered three boats & (?)balled the job...hauled aback to windward of “Bertha” she having whale alongside.

July 15th ...saw a lone whale a long way off. got breakfast & lowered three boats at 6-45 later lowered fourth boat. struck whale at 12 m. a long way off. he going N.N.E. very slowly. took mates line soon after striking Mr. Crourie bending on. he could not get to whale. finally mate under run line & stopped whale at 3 P.M. got him fluked alongside at 5 P.M… Lat. N. 34º-13’ Lon. W. 53º-00’ 16th ...one stmr. spoke us at 8-30 P.M. asking if needed assistance saw our bug light. cut the whale got case bailed & overboard at 6 P.M. (a heavy whale) raised fuier(?) & took jaw. cut around head when a tube gave out plugged it & started steam when another gave out. had to cool off & get inside fire box to turn down end of tubes they being left straight when put in. took in body. raised scalp bone. took in junk (partly) by hand, then having steam finished landing junk & took in case with donkey… 17th ...boiling. Cut up junk & put in casks. put new roughs in one lower cutting block. saw nothing except quite a lot of seaweed & several dolphin. caught two. Mr. Soares came to be treated for chancres tonight.

July 18th Dead calm all day. dry & hot. Saw killers & porpoise. Finished boiling at 4 P.M. made a new head for one junk cask. Whales are scarce with us this season so far. Another day gone. Lat N. 34º-11’ Lon. W. 32º-45’ 19th Calm in early morning. gathering light ... from S.S.W at 4, made sail + turned IV. took in sail at sundown and ... to wind on port tack. saw took sails out of last sail cask and stowed in star board house. got cask ... ready for water also one ... cask, ... cask and a rum cask emptied and flagged for water.

20th Fine whaling day. with wind SW to W breeze except midday when we got a wind and rain squall. rain down of oil this AM ... water into the casks, fitted between desks. saw one two mast schr. went on board & got a newspaper (July 6) & a bucket of potatoes. found her to be a N.Y pilot boat (No. 2) bought by J. C. Sylvia for C.V.I. trade he with two others Alais Turick formed the crew. bound to St. Vincent with foodstuff. 34-20 52-20 D.R. so ends this day 21st Calm until 5PM then got from ESE with rain saw nothing today.

July 22nd ...raised three whales at 5 a.m...came on rain at 5-30 & lost whales...made all sail & kept N.E. raised whales at 9-30 lowered all boats & struck at 12-30 saw ten or more whales...went to N.E. quick. Lat. N. 33º-52’ Lon. W. 51º-35’ 23rd ...Mr. Soares off duty headache & pains all over body. Gave mate spare darting gun. 33-52 26th ...J.J. DeCruz & E. Bruce had a scrap this P.M. no noise & cause I did not ask. 34-01 52-00
