Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic. Includes descriptions of types of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, shipboard medicine, desertions, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a diary following the voyage logbook written by Captain Chace's daughter, Marion Almy Chase. The vessel began leaking on November 14, 1914. The First Mate gave up the logbook and shipped home on 1 February 1914, and the Captain took over logbook duties. Several men got into a fight resulting in some arrests while on shore on February 24, 1915. One man was stabbed and wounded during a fight on July 10, 1915. The captain administered several medical treatments for venereal diseases in July 1915. One man was drunk and put in irons on October 2, 1915. One man died on November 15, 1915. One man was stabbed in the face with a pike on January 29, 1916. One man was punished after getting into a fight on June 5, 1916. One man was treated for syphilis on June 28, 1916. June 23rd 1916 ...raised a lone whale...struck at 12-50 P.M. boat striking (2nd mate) getting stoven & filled. mate took line. got whale & boat (stoven) alongside at 2 30 P.M. ..Brig Viola [Portland ME 4/16-8/16] came down & Capt. [John Atkins] Cook came on board giving news of the fleet of whalers on the ground all doing poorly seeing no whales… Lat. N. 31º-38 Lon W. 51º-10’ 24th ...a whaling schr. came down & spoke us at 6 a.m. name Valkyria of N. Bedford. master came aboard with boats crew & stayed until 7 P.M. reported 130 this cruise having seen whales twice only. 32-00 51-00 June 26th ...fitting davit to L.B. finished repairing stoven boat. Lat. N. 32º-18 Lon W. 52º-30’

27th raised whales. Lowered at 4-55 P.M. got one fluked at 7-30 saw ten young bulls going S.W. scattered. 32-50 53-00 28th ...hooked on to whale & took him in at 6 a.m...J. Antone’s chancres cured. Britto improving steadily, bubo disappearing. sores in mouth probable inherited syphilis. J. Stevens sore feet (caused by chafe of shoes in part), symptoms of blood poison. soaking one foot in hot water.

June 30th ...one sch. One bark & one brig in sight a.m. P.M. saw another schr. the bark “Bertha”[N.B. 5/15-9/16] came down to us & Capt. [William F.] Joseph came aboard at 10 a.m. our mate going on board the “Bertha” with a boats crew from us raised whales at 11 a.m. & called back on board...whales going to windward quick. Lat N. 32º-49’ Lon. W. 54º-00’ [A number of days with heavy rain about this time.] July 4th This day comes in tends with a nice wholesail boat breeze & smooth sea some hazy. raised a lone whale...got him alongside at 1 15 P.M...J. Antones off duty darting iron in striking the whale gave him a lesion of some sort in side. 33-19 52-40
