Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic. Includes descriptions of types of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, shipboard medicine, desertions, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a diary following the voyage logbook written by Captain Chace's daughter, Marion Almy Chase. The vessel began leaking on November 14, 1914. The First Mate gave up the logbook and shipped home on 1 February 1914, and the Captain took over logbook duties. Several men got into a fight resulting in some arrests while on shore on February 24, 1915. One man was stabbed and wounded during a fight on July 10, 1915. The captain administered several medical treatments for venereal diseases in July 1915. One man was drunk and put in irons on October 2, 1915. One man died on November 15, 1915. One man was stabbed in the face with a pike on January 29, 1916. One man was punished after getting into a fight on June 5, 1916. One man was treated for syphilis on June 28, 1916. June 1 1916 ...cleaning up boiler & engine & repairing top gal. sail. mate on sail and master on engine blowing off boiler which was & is in leaky condition. engine also needing packing badly. cleaned & painted driving wheels & other parts… Lat. N. 27º-19’ Lon W. 60º-18’ 2nd ...saw nothing but seaweed & that quite plentiful. Flagg on duty, the three syphilitics improving slowly. Finished painting engine. 28-44 59-27

Remarks Continued [marginalia] 1916 June 5th Lat. N. 30º 47' Lon. W. 57º-30

Light brezes these 24 hrs. [from?] N E & N.N.E. saw nothing except one drift log & porpoise. employed working on old top gal. sail reparing it finished it also master mader another new running rigging block. at 10 30 last night master was called to quell a disturbance on deck. Second officer Freitas & Sylvester Monteiro being principals, with others mixing in. Antone Spenser, a boatsteerer being the one to wake cabin boy & send him to call master, who went on deck & on investigation ordered irons brought & Monteiro to come aft. Master lead ing him he resisted & master finally hit him twice with belaying pin. he was put in irons & put below. this man has repeat edly made trouble present time was insolent on quarter deck in bracing yards, later re fusing to keep quiet after going forward telling men what he would do. was ordered up on mast by second officer on his Monteiro refusing officer took hold of him to lead him where on Monteiro struck officer & scrap was on. first cause of trouble was Monteiro finding fault about having to work talking to other men & he with four others swinging off on lee top gal. brace trying to start something. C.A.C. took irons off man at 8:30 P.M. So ends M

Light air & calm saw nothing. this day broke out a cask of oil that was leaking & stalfed it sent down main sail & put on chafing cloths. So ends teusday.

June 7th ...sent a boat to Italian stmr. Eliopoli of Genova. she stopping & sending us a couple of newspapers (May 16-17) also a couple of Italian Journals or magazines. also gave us our position, he differing slightly from ourselves. she was in ballast from Australia last from Gibraltar & bound to U.S.A. Masters name F Gurigno. Lat N. 31º-08’ Lon. 57º-30’ 9th ...sick men improving slowly. treating Mr. Crowie for sore mouth, he on duty. 31 55 56-02 10th ...Started putting goods from slopchest in a bag on deck as bounty to induce a sharp lookout. 31-52 55-30
