Logbook of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic. Includes descriptions of types of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, shipboard medicine, desertions, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a diary following the voyage logbook written by Captain Chace's daughter, Marion Almy Chase. The vessel began leaking on November 14, 1914. The First Mate gave up the logbook and shipped home on 1 February 1914, and the Captain took over logbook duties. Several men got into a fight resulting in some arrests while on shore on February 24, 1915. One man was stabbed and wounded during a fight on July 10, 1915. The captain administered several medical treatments for venereal diseases in July 1915. One man was drunk and put in irons on October 2, 1915. One man died on November 15, 1915. One man was stabbed in the face with a pike on January 29, 1916. One man was punished after getting into a fight on June 5, 1916. One man was treated for syphilis on June 28, 1916. Whaling groundds include the Western, Western Island, Steen, Carroll, and Tristan grounds.; Old Dartmouth Historical Society (ODHS 748); Whaling vessel out of New Bedford, Mass., mastered by Charles A. Chace Master Wed Nov 18th: Lat 36º 22N this day comes in with NW wind Long W and heavy sea going Bark under lower topsail had rain squalls throught day 3 pm under lower tops and courses WInds hauled to West steering S by W Course pumps and lights carfuly attended to 7 pm no change so ends this day Lat N Thurs Nov 19th Long W this day Comes in with N.W. gail Bark under lower main topsail and fore topmast and main Staysail steering S by W Course Blowing hard in rain squalls at 1 pm took main topsail luf too on the Starboard tack 3 pm a sea stove in the gang way Board. We put life lines acros it at 7 pm had heavy Squall Brocter Standing on 29-06 so ends this day Lat 34 degrees 06 N Frid Nov 20th: Long W this day comes in with a NW gail and rain squalls at 7 am Crew coplained all of the starboard Ecepting Nichalass Ferndnades ho Came out Port Watch did not Complain they Complained of Wet Forecastle they turned to With the understanding not 20 [-] to make a port 10 am set tops 11 am set uper tops and main gallant sail Better weather Peter Merrisa sick of duty pumping one hundred strokes per hour. so ends this day Lat 31º 28N Sat Nov 21th: Long 20º 56 W this day comes in With frest N E. Line 32 & 33: Here, the pumping is recorded in strokes, which is common to many whaling logs. In earlier entries, the Mate had been recording pumping in minutes. This is a serious leak.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES Lines 37 & 38: With the possiblity of sighting whales off the coast of Africa, watches were set at the mastheads to look out for them. Captain Chace was known as a "Masthead Captain," so it is likely that he would be taking watches there himself.
